I've been to Europe and seen quite a few of these foreign diesels. They're usually equipped with manual transmissions, and some of them, like the Volkswagen Lupo, get around 80 MPG. A Civic Hybrid gets around 38 MPG. They also have no problem driving them around when it's cold out, and Diesel Fuel is cheaper than gasoline in Europe. In France, all diesel sold at the pumps is B5, according to a government mandate. The Black Forest region of Germany requires that all diesel engines run on B100. Pure Biodiesel is actually sold at the pumps.
